In Pastores Dabo Vobis, St. John Paul II reaffirmed a foundational principle of the Church: the priest is formed as a whole person before he is entrusted with the care of souls.
The Church has never presumed that theological knowledge alone prepares a man for priesthood. Priestly formation is intentionally ordered across human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral dimensions, with human formation serving as the necessary foundation upon which the others are built.

Formation For The Lay Faithful
Through Baptism, every Christian is called to holiness, communion, and participation in the mission of the Church. The lay faithful are entrusted with the formation of families, the witness of Christian life, and the transformation of the world through their vocation.

Human beings are formed in relationship.
Trust, attachment, belonging, empathy, repair, communion, and the capacity for self-gift all emerge within relational environments.

How We Encounter God
The spiritual dimension cultivates receptivity to grace, prayer, sacramental participation, discernment, wonder, beauty, and relationship with the living God.

Every person is created for self-gift.
Vocational formation helps persons discern and embody the unique way they are called to love, serve, and participate in God's mission.

A Trinitarian Vision Of Formation
The deepest truths about the human person are revealed in the life of God Himself.
The Father eternally gives Himself in love.
The Son eternally receives and returns that love.
The Holy Spirit is the communion of love shared between them.
Created in the image of this divine communion, the human person is likewise made for a life of receiving, revealing, and returning love.

THE MOVEMENT
A three-part formative movement:

RECEIVED
The person encounters the Living God as Love and Mercy, receives their identity as gift, and grows in the freedom to love God, self, and neighbor through trustful surrender rather than fear.

REVEALED
In relationship, the person grows in holiness, and becomes who God is calling them to be; embodying His unconditional love, through witness and self-gift.
03
RETURNED
By freely responding to God's invitation, the person makes a sincere gift of self through vocation and mission, participating in God's work of redemption and building up the Body of Christ.
